Is this course right for me?

This course is perfect for beginner players who can confidently play and change between the C, F and G chord on the ukulele. In this course you will learn:

  • Your first 12 chords and how to read music TAB to play simple melodies on the ukulele

  • The parts of the ukulele and an Introduction to fingerpicking.

  • Reading music notification, rhythmic strumming pattern and identifying key signatures and time signatures.

  • Identifying major, minor or dominant 7th chords by ear.

  • Accompanying a melodusic

  • A full Exam Readiness package and step by step support for exam entry

This course is based on the London College of Music syllabus for Ukulele Grade 1.

  • Lesson 1: Rhythm Study 1

    This study will develop your strumming technique. You will learn to read a rhythm in 4/4 time combining crotchets and quavers. We will give you a suggested second rhythm for your repeat – the island strum!. This study is in G Major and includes the chords: G, D Am & C. All the marking on the piece will be explored giving you all the tools required to jam this along with us at the end of the lesson.

  • Lesson 2: Rhythm Study 3

    This study will further develop your strumming technique, playing a rhythm with three beats in a bar combining crotchets and quavers. We will give you a suggested strumming pattern for your repeat. This study is in the key of A minor and includes the chords: Am C F G Dm E7.All the markings on the piece will be explored giving you the tools required to jam this along with us at the end of the lesson.

  • Lesson 3: Performance Piece "Oh, Susanna"

    This performance piece will develop your ability to play a melody on the ukulele reading tablature notation. We will explore how to play the rhythm of the notes, plucking the melody using single notes on the ukulele. This well known piece is in the key of D Major and has 4 beats on the bar. We will slowly develop this new skill enabling you to really build your confidence and playing along with melodies until your heart is content!

  • Lesson 4: Free Choice Specialism Fingerstyle Study

    This beautiful piece is a finger picking exercise. You will learn the technique required to fluently finger pick using all 4 strings of the ukulele independently. We will teach you how to use your right hand to pick the strings with an even touch resulting in a stunning performance piece for you to share with you friends and family. This piece is in the key of C Major and has 4 beats in the bar. Chords included in this piece are: C Am F G7 Dm G

  • Lesson 5: Prepared Accompaniment

    This piece will really develop your skill to play with others which will ensure you have excellent timing and fluency. The examiner will play a melody and you will learn to strum the chords along resulting in another beautiful performance piece. We will teach you the structure of this piece, two excellent strumming patterns and give you the opportunity to jam along with the melody to make sure you are exam ready. This piece has a time signature of 4 beats in a bar and is in G Major including the chords; G, C D Am

  • Lesson 6: Musicianship

    This extremely valuable lesson will develop your overall musicianship. You will learn to clap back a rhythm patterm, identify major and minor chords and will start to develop your knowledge of the parts of the ukulele and the notes on the fretboard. These key skills will really develop you as a musician helping you in the future to identify chords in well known songs, play melodies using notation and identify key notes on your ukulele.

  • Lesson 7: Examinations

    This lesson is everything you need to know to help you prepare for and sit a successful exam. We will cover booking exams, connectivity calls and best approaches and top tips for your exam day!
